WHAT'S THE MEANING?

Open world games are forms of video games where a player or a group of players can explore a virtual world without running into invisible walls like in linear games. These open world games have boundaries but are often displayed as unsurpassable forms of land or water.

Open World Horror Games

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that Resident Evil, the 1996 game that streamlined the survival horror genre, was heavily influenced by the themes and gameplay of the 1992 PC game, Alone in the Dark? In 1992, French gaming company Infogrames released Alone in the Dark, an action horror game for MS-DOS. The game was set in the 1920s and the character is in a mansion in Louisiana, and the player must guide the character out of the dark and haunted mansion by slaying ghosts and monsters. Players can choose between Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood as their character, who wakes up in the attic of the mansion and must find the way out, all the while battling slave zombies and giant bipedal rat monsters. Players can look for weapons to help in battle, but some monsters can be defeated with fists. The game was met with positive reception, with gaming magazine AllGame giving it 3.5 stars out of 5, while EGM scored it 8/10. Famitsu gave it 33/40 in their review and Next Generation rated it with 4 stars out of 5. It won three awards in the 1993 European Computer Trade SHow: Best Graphics, Most Original Game, and BEst French Game of the Year.

'I really liked the graphics of Don't Starve. Although everybody compares them to Tim Burton movies, they reminded me more of Edward Gorey. Basically, you're in a world where lots of normally cute things, like bunnies, are trying to kill you, and you have to kill them first in order to get anything to eat. The developers are constantly adding new parts of the world and new things for you to fight, so you'll never get bored - more likely just exhausted. '

Sure, the beta stage still isn't done, but it will be soon and it'll be rad!! The pixelized/8-bit graphics really gives me a dose of nostalgia :D'

'DayZ is a gritty, authentic, open-world survival horror hybrid-MMO game, in which players follow a single goal: to survive in the harsh post-apocalyptic landscape as long as they can. Players can experience powerful events and emotions arising from the ever-evolving emergent gameplay. There are no superficial tips, waypoints, built in tutorials or help given to players. Every decision matters, there are no save games, no extra lives, every mistake can be lethal. If you fail, you lose everything and you need to play again from the beginning with nothing but your wits, and your two hands. Fight the hostile environment, where every other player can be friend or foe and nothing can be taken for granted. '

I would have to team up with other survivors in order to play, and while I might be interested in checking it out, I definitely wouldn't categorize it as 'single player.'

I like the way the game forces you to learn programming and serious tactical play for the sake of play, in that way it's a lot slower and more methodical than others in the genre. You learn piece by piece and slowly, grinding out vital knowledge over time.'

It looks like you have to follow a set destination to go through the game like in a story. Other than that, it looks like a solid recommendation for a horror survival game. I don’t have any experience with it, but the overall ratings look appealing and would be a decent solution for this problem.'
